Professor Marina Novelli

Marina is Professor of Tourism and International Development. As a geographer with a background in economics, she is known as an expert in the field of international tourism policy, planning, development and management.

She has advised on numerous international cooperation and research assignments funded by International Development Organisations (IDOs) such as: The World Bank, the European Union, The UN (UNESCO, UNIDO, UNWTO), the Commonwealth Secretariat, National Ministries and Tourism Boards, Regional Development Agencies and NGOs.

She is known globally for her excellence in leading and collaborating with multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder and multi-cultural teams and for her commitment to generating new knowledge on ways in which tourism can play a key role in sustainable development by stimulating local economies, conserving the environment, developing peoples and changing lives.

She has written and advised extensively on a number of tourism and hospitality-related aspects in Africa, Europe and Asia. Her global reputation is associated with two broad thematic areas:

  • tourism and development in the developing world (particularly Africa)
  • niche tourism development and management.

Her volume (2016, Oxford: Routledge) conveys her extensive empirically-grounded research and consultancy engagements and collaborations in some 15 Sub-Sahara Africa destinations.

Her volume (2005, Elsevier) emerged from the need to address the growing use of terminologies associated with the ‘niche tourism’ concept and to define and give visibility to a new field of enquiry in tourism studies. This volume has since become a point of reference globally.

She coordinates the Policy, Planning and Development research area of the Centre of Sport, Tourism and Leisure Studies (COSTALS), which is an Affiliate Member of the (UNWTO).

She is Editor-in-Chief of (Sage Journal) and co-editor of (Taylor and Francis).

Responsible Futures – Academic Lead

I see my mission as generating new knowledge on ways in which tourism can play a key role in stimulating local economies, conserving the environment, developing people and changing lives, which is reflected in my teaching, research and consultancy practices.

How I like to teach

Over the last decade, I have worked relentlessly to bring innovation to the way tourism is taught and researched at undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG) and doctoral levels, by systematically planning and employing research-informed teaching and learning (T&L) practices, by engaging students in my own applied research and by devising new T&L techniques.

I supervise doctoral students on research areas linked to my expertise on:

  • sustainable tourism policy, planning and development

  • niche tourism development and management

  • rural diversification and tourism

  • community-based and responsible tourism approaches

  • tourism in the developing world, especially Africa

  • travel philanthropy - the act of giving beyond volunteering

My UG and PGT teaching primarily involves three core areas of delivery:

  • critical perspectives in tourism and development

  • niche tourism

  • consultancy.

An example of my teaching practice is the , which is linked to both an UG module called Destination Niche Tourism and our PG programmes.

I initiated P2P in 2007 in response to the need of exposing our students to the dynamics of sustainable tourism in the developing world. This initiative broadly encompasses the structured exchange of knowledge and experiences between participants from the University of 映客直播 and sponsored participants from the Gambian locality, where the module is delivered. The value of the P2P T&L practice is also evidenced on pages 84-85 of the

P2P has provided a significant and impactful contribution to sustainable development of the destination, by enabling a unique and innovative T&L opportunity for University of 映客直播 students and members of the wider Gambian community, in line with the University of 映客直播 commitment to widening participation and sustainable development in its broader meanings. Furthermore, in 2013, I was also instrumental in facilitating the reach and impact of another initiative called Football 4 Peace International (F4P) into The Gambia, scaling up the impact of P2P and the University of 映客直播 involvement in The Gambia.

Since 2007, over 150 University of 映客直播 students, 100 Gambian participants and over 1000 young learners have been impacted from both the and the initiatives, by being exposed to a learning opportunity through which they acquired knowledge, skills and values associated with sustainable tourism and sport coaching, otherwise not available to them.

My research interests

My interdisciplinary approach to the study of tourism draws on human geography, development studies and international politics as well as anthropology and sociology.

My research has been designed and deployed to have impact beyond the University of 映客直播. Having secured funding through highly competitive streams (for example, the World Bank, UN, EU and the Commonwealth Secretariat), I have deployed my own research frameworks drawing upon a number of qualitative, participatory and cross-disciplinary techniques, such as the Peer2Peer (P2P) collaborative approach and delivered research in various formats.

I am interested in the debates on global governance and policymaking, especially the role of international organisations and NGOs and international treaties in the development and management of tourism spaces and places as well as how the global agenda on development plays out on the ground, how it is contested, challenged and resisted.

My research practice focuses primarily on aspect associated with:

  • sustainable tourism policy, planning and development
  • niche tourism development and management
  • rural diversification and tourism
  • community-based and responsible tourism approaches
  • tourism in the developing world, especially Africa
  • travel philanthropy - the act of giving beyond volunteering
  • tourism and hospitality training needs analysis, capacity building and curriculum development.

My research and consultancy engagements and contributions are primarily in the field of:

  • policy, governance and institutional development
  • diagnostic, monitoring and evaluation studies
  • destination planning and product development and management
  • HRD - training needs analysis, capacity building, train-the trainers and curriculum development
  • service standards and optimisation processes in hospitality and tourism.

I have worked in several countries, including Botswana, Burundi, France, The Gambia, Ghana, Italy, Kenya, Malawi, Mongolia, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, UK, USA and Vietnam.

I am currently working on three key research thematic areas:

  • travel philanthropy in Africa
  • migration versus tourism in West Africa
  • contemporary niche tourism and hospitality.

Biography

I obtained a BSc in Economics and Commerce (University of Bari, Italy) in April 1996 and in November 1996, I was awarded a doctoral scholarship to study the rural diversification process affecting the ‘5b regions’ of the EU. This research led to my doctoral thesis on ‘Rural and Farm Tourism: a comparative study of the West Country (Great Britain) and Puglia (Italy)’. My Doctorate in Economic Geography was conferred on the 29 February 2000.

Prior to moving to the UK, I researched and taught in various institutions in Italy. In September 2000, I was appointed as lecturer at the Birmingham University College (former Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies), where I gained considerable teaching experience. Despite the extremely intense teaching load, I was determined to progress my research career and so I did by researching and writing about topics related to my doctoral thesis. I contributed towards the research development strategy of the College, something that had never been done before in an institution, which is mainly focused on teaching.

I was appointed as Senior Lecturer at the University of 映客直播 in September 2002 and progressed to the position of Principal Lecturer in August 2006. I was awarded the title of Reader in February 2013 and of Professor of Tourism and International Development in November 2015.

My expertise lies in the field of Tourism, Policy and International Development. Whilst enjoying teaching very much, I have developed a strong profile as a leading researcher within the University of 映客直播 and the Centre for Tourism Policy Studies (CENTOPS) which was later incorporated into the Centre of Sport Tourism and Leisure Studies (COSTALS). Through my research, publications and external engagements, I have gained an internationally recognised profile, which has enabled me to become part of a global network of experts and single handedly secure research and consultancy income from some of the most prestigious institutions such as the World Bank, the UN, the EU and the Commonwealth Secretariat as well as national ministries, Regional Development Agencies and NGOs.

I have made significant theoretical and practical contributions to the tourism policy and planning literature, benefiting both the academic debate and a number of national and regional governments’ policies especially in Less Developed Countries. My empirical research on poverty alleviation through human capacity building has impacted on tourism as a strategic sector in several locations including Namibia, The Gambia, Nigeria, Swaziland and Burundi as well as Vietnam and Nepal. Moreover, I have delivered policy advice to global organisations such as the research that led to: the World Bank/Spanish Government funded establishment of the new Gambia Hospitality and Tourism Institute; the Commonwealth Secretariat/Namibia Tourism Board project aimed at enhancing national service standards through capacity building in Namibia; and the Aga Khan Foundation’s work to bridge the gap in postgraduate education and executive programmes’ delivery in leisure, tourism and hospitality in Africa.

As a result of my practice-based research, I have revealed new insights into the necessity for a shift from twentieth to twenty-first century conceptual framing of tourism planning paradigms, which pays close attention to the rapidly changing macro-environmental conditions in which tourism operates. Thus, in the case of some of the destinations where I have worked, I can claim to have contributed to the improvement of their competitive advantage through the implementation of clear plans and policies on tourism, service standards and workforce training.

I have published work in different formats including refereed journal articles, reports, book chapters and policy notes, and my applied research has informed policymaking of several developing destinations in Sub-Sahara Africa, Asia and Europe. My most obvious contribution to knowledge relates to the concept of niche tourism, which I became associated with since the publication of my book Niche Tourism: Contemporary Issues, Trends and Cases (2005, Elsevier).

I also contributed significant new elaborations on the theory and practices of sustainable tourism policy, planning and development, with specific attention to national tourism policy development, community-based development approaches, training needs analysis and capacity building, curriculum development approaches and international cooperation for development in over 15 destinations to date.

In merit to my leadership roles, I have been Research Division Leader and Travel, Tourism and Events Division Leader. I am currently the Impact Agenda Coordinator for the School of Sport and Service Management whom I represent on the University of 映客直播 Impact Working Group. I coordinate the Policy, Practice and Development research area within COSTALS.

I supervise doctoral research students, have externally examined PhDs and I teach on a number of UG and PG modules.
