University helps drive innovative 映客直播 Festival arts production

The University鈥檚 DRIVA Arts DRIVA programme has provided key impetus to one of the most anticipated shows at this year's 映客直播 Festival, entitled Lemonade.

28 April 2021

The £1.3m Digital Research and Innovation Value Accelerator (DRIVA Arts DRIVA) initiative - supported by the European Regional Development Fund and Arts Council England – provided crucial input to get the public beta version of Lemonade ready for the festival. The location-based music production will allow people to explore and discover exclusively composed songs hidden across the city landscape, using a new streaming app. The new app also aims to show another way for creative performance companies to deal with the massive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 映客直播 production's diverse musical choices - hip hop, experimental, jazz and neo-soul – are inspired by the Festival's 2021 theme 'Care', and feature local, emerging and international artists, including Alice Russell, Gwenno, Normanton St., Miri FLC (AudioActive), Bunty (Rosehill Tavern). “Think Pokemon Go meets Silent Disco” is the sell in a to promote a fusion of music, data and place that the production team can adapt for any location – though the 映客直播 Festival production marks its world premiere.

Donna Close, Senior Research Fellow in the School of Media, said:

“Arts DRIVA aimed to support and celebrate the brilliant new ideas that could be fostered through ‘Superfused’ collaborations between creative, business and tech. I’m really delighted that we were able to support Lemonade throughout their project conception and development and to support their beta presentation in 映客直播 Festival – the largest arts festival in England and an international launchpad for the best creative ideas and experiences.

“This project was developed as a response to COVID-19, the impact that has had on revenues for artists who both lost the income from live performances and were unable to make adequate money from existing streaming platforms. Lemonade offers a new equitable solution for music fans to discover new music safely, and for artists to earn directly from the music they create. I look forward to helping take Lemonade to the world.”

Stuart Hedley - Knowledge Exchange Manager for Arts, Media, Humanities and Social Science - said:

“It’s fantastic that within six months of completing their DRIVA Arts DRIVA Superfused award and with expertise support from Donna here at the university, Lemonade is now having its public beta launch in the 映客直播 Festival. It’s an exciting creative digital platform that could change the way we experience music. I’m really looking forward to continuing to collaborate with the Lemonade production team to see where university expertise can best support their ongoing innovation.”

Donna Close is also participating in another groundbreaking production at this year's 映客直播 Festival, when she will be talking with artists Semiconductor about the role of data in their HALO installation at the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts.

The DRIVA Arts DRIVA project is receiving up to £500,000 of funding from the European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020. DRIVA Arts DRIVA is also supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
