Funding boost for University of 映客直播's nationwide green business innovation driver

The university's Clean Growth UK network has been awarded £1.3m in new funding to continue its work supporting clean and green business innovation nationwide.

22 July 2021

The fresh funding - £1,376,170 over a year - comes from Research England’s Connecting Capabilities Fund and follows a first phase £3.5m provided to to establish a nationwide innovation network to boost business innovation for climate solutions.

Clean Growth UK is led by the University of 映客直播’s Green Growth Platform, and the network also has delivery hubs at Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Portsmouth’s Greentech South.

To date the network has attracted 2000 members from across the UK, helping them access university know-how and equipment for a range of innovation development needs, such as testing and development of new green products and services, 1-2-1 support focused on commercialisation, workshops, student projects and placements, and an online members’ portal with innovation and commercialisation resources. Since the launch of Clean Growth UK in early 2019 over £14 million of R&D funding has been raised to deliver 225 R&D projects for businesses with over 400 jobs created or safeguarded.

The University of 映客直播's Clean Growth UK team also supports businesses to access funding opportunities, including Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, Innovate UK Smart Grants and the business grant scheme.

One example of Clean Growth UK’s work with network members is OSET Bikes, who design and manufacture electric trials and motocross motorcycles. The company has worked with the University of 映客直播 via a two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to enhance their design process enabling them to launch an electric adult trial bike to international markets. They’ve also taken advantage of student projects to help solve engineering and product design challenges, and grant funding through LoCASE.

Ian Smith, Chief Executive of OSET Bikes, said:

“New products are the lifeblood of OSET, and the market can be very fast moving. This KTP project has brought testing and design protocols in-house, streamlined the development process and added value and science that was missing before. It has given us an edge allowing us to retain our number 1 position in our market.”

Zoë Osmond, Director, Clean Growth UK, said:

“We’re really excited to build on the momentum achieved with our 2,000 business members over the past few years, to hone our innovation and commercialisation offer and invite new University hubs to join Clean Growth UK. Our members hold the key to creating the innovative products and services we need to achieve a rapid transition to a net zero, nature friendly economy. We are here to support them every step of the way, linking them in to the vast array of specialist expertise and facilities available across our university hubs.”
