映客直播 medical duo take leading role in transformative Green Surgery Challenge

Surgeons from the 映客直播 and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) will help launch a new initiative on 3 February to promote greater sustainability within surgery.

1 February 2021

Professor Mahmood Bhutta - Consultant in ENT Surgery – will join Sustainable Surgery Fellow, Dr Chantelle Rizan, to introduce the . This aims to guide the future of surgery by driving recognition in the UK’s surgical community of the need to share and promote ways of practising that are less harmful to the environment, and that build social sustainability.

According to the , the NHS generates around 22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2) each year in England, and 5.4% of net UK greenhouse gas emissions. There is also increasing reliance on single-use plastics in global healthcare which generates millions of tonnes of plastic waste per year.

Many of the products used within UK healthcare are manufactured overseas, creating impacts on the environment through transport. There are also reports of widespread violations of labour rights in the manufacture of medical gloves, face masks, surgical instruments, and medical textiles.

Chantelle Rizan said: “Surgery is a resource intensive area which poses a major challenge in us meeting Net Zero carbon emissions within the NHS. We have a responsibility to our future generations of patients and surgeons to improve the sustainability of surgery.”

“This competition is a fantastic opportunity for surgical teams to gain support in translating their ideas on how to improve sustainability into reality, and to gain skills in quantifying the benefits in line with the triple bottom line of sustainability. I am sure many surgeons and allied professionals are doing great things to reduce their environmental impact, and we want to showcase this.’”

The online launch for the Green Surgery Challenge will begin at 1900 (GMT) on 3 February.

As well as Professor Bhutta and Dr Rizan from BSMS, the event will feature Ms Victoria Pegna, co-founder of the Sustainability in Surgery working group, and Professor Neil Mortensen, the President of Royal College of Surgeons of England. Further details and tickets are available .

Topics that will be discussed include:

  • How to get involved in the Green Surgery Challenge
  • Practical tips and advice on how to achieve more sustainable surgical practices
  • Discussing how surgery contributes to the climate crisis.

The initiative pulls together several partners alongside , including the Royal College of Surgeons, the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, NIHR MedTech Co-operative in Surgical Technologies, Elemental Healthcare, Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, and the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition.

Projects taking part in the Challenge will need to finish and submit data and write ups by 15 July, with judging and awards in November. Winning projects will then be given seed funding.
