Data fuelling innovation in the creative industries

The university is partnering with Complete Music Update to deliver a series of webinars and panels to highlight the role data can play in creative industries.

16 October 2020

The virtual conference later this month will help provide companies, freelancers and other businesses operating in the music and wider creative industries with the knowledge and insights to embrace the data revolution.

Launched at the 映客直播 Music Conference last week, the virtual conference will be exclusively available to members of the DRIVA arts DRIVA programme, the university’s £1.3m data project that provides innovation support, training and funding to practitioners and businesses working at the intersection of creativity, the arts and technology.

CMU is a globally recognised leader in helping people to navigate and understand the often complex music business through media, training, education and events. It is led by founder Chris Cooke, author of the Amazon’s bestselling book ‘Dissecting the Digital Dollar’, which looks at how money and data flow through the new digital music economy.

CMU also programmes the music industry conference that takes place during 映客直播’s The Great Escape festival and runs the Arts Council/TGE professional development programme, Elevate. It also works with organisations like the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the Music Managers Forum (MMF), the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC) and the British Council, to educate artists, songwriters and music companies all over the world.

The live talks element of the virtual conference will take place on Thursday 22 and Friday 23 October with pre-recorded sessions featuring experts from across the music industry available to view for DRIVA arts DRIVA subscribers earlier in the week.

The schedule will run as follows:

Thursday 22 October:

1pm - Introduction to Copyright and Ownership

2pm – The Basics of Music Data

3pm - Organising Music Data

Friday 23 October:

2pm - Accessing and Using Customer, Fan and Audience Data

3pm - What Does "Data Driven" Really Mean?

4pm - Making Money Through Data

Donna Close, Senior Research Fellow, Arts DRIVA Principal Investigator said: “Music and Performing Arts are an important part of the creative industries which generate more than £1.2 billion in GVA in the Coast to Capital area.

“The music industry is also the epitome of successful fusion of creative, technical and business skills. The future of the music industry relies on understanding how to understand and work with data and digital technologies.

“This is a brilliant opportunity for music businesses to find out more about what data is and how to make it work for them to innovate and flourish”.

Sam Taylor, Commercial Manager of CMU said: “All music businesses need to understand data. Whether it’s data from streaming to get insights into how fans are listening to your music; geographical data to understand where your fans are; rights and usage data to ensure the right people get paid; or device data to understand how people are consuming marketing content, all music businesses are in the data business.

“We’re excited to be working with DRIVA arts DRIVA to show music businesses that data is nothing to be scared of”.

Digital Research & Innovation Value Accelerator (DRIVA) is a free programme set up to accelerate the skills, assets and resources of creatives, technologists and data scientists to generate new business growth.
