Student's pride at bride design award

A University of 映客直播 student was named ‘Student Designer of the Year’ at the prestigious Harrogate Bridal Show.

18 September 2018

Holly-Ann Tullett, who studies Fashion with Business Studies, won the award for her meticulously crafted dress design, much of which was hand-sewn and embroidered.

After Holly-Ann submitted her design to the panel in April, it was shortlisted for the award and chosen to be exhibited at the Bridal Show. Here, it was judged by a team from British Bridal Suppliers Association (BBSA) and she was announced as winner of ‘Student Designer of the Year’ in the Bridal Buyers Awards.

“Just to be shortlisted was so exciting for me so to win is incredible,” said Holly-Ann. “Having my work praised by the BBSA feels so rewarding and I am so grateful they provide students with a platform to engage with the bridal design industry.”

All entrants to the competition were given a simple brief: to redesign a dress silhouette in whichever way they wanted. The theme of the brief was ‘imagine’. Holly-Ann worked hard to locate certain materials to incorporate into her creation. She then took painstaking care over the sewing and embroidering of the dress.

“The brief stated attention to detail would score points so I sourced a specific type of vintage guipure lace applique, hand-sewed every piece onto the dress individually, hand-embroidered my own motifs and embellished the lace with crystals and beads by hand.”

Holly-Ann added the experience of attending the Harrogate Bridal Show was invaluable as she looks to the future: “Meeting so many talented individuals who I already look up to in the industry was so rewarding. I was given insight, advice and even future opportunities.

“This has already opened doors for me and widened my perspective on what sector of the industry I would like to work towards. Moving forward I hope this award will allow me to gain internships over my placement year with couture-level brands so I can continue to improve my design skills.”

Craig Higgins, fashion course leader at the university, said: “We are very pleased and proud of Holly-Ann, it is a great achievement for her to be recognised in such a specialist area of fashion design while in the second year of her course.

“Holly-Ann has been committed to pursuing her dream of working in bridal and evening wear design throughout the course. This achievement is one of several examples this year of our students being recognised in national competitions and awards and reflects the high standards of our students and graduates.”
