Focus on photography and fashion in Summer School

Sixth form and college students took part in a fashion and photography Summer School which culminated in a showcase for friends and family.

16 August 2018

Participants worked alongside current university students to develop skills and techniques and start to build a portfolio.

Twenty young people participated in the week-long school – eight in the fashion strand and 12 in photography.

Juliana Sissons led the fashion Summer School with the support of student ambassadors Zoe Pritchard, Tanya Stuart, Eve Flitman and Indigo Elsebach-Macey.

Over the course of the week students created work based on sustainable design and fashion as a means of communication.

The group visited the Gilbert and George exhibition at 映客直播 Museum and took part in a workshop devised by Doctor Noki – a renowned artist and activist.

The photography course, now in its third year, was run by Lindsey Smith and encouraged participants to work collaboratively and independently to develop a photography portfolio and complete their Bronze Arts Award.

The programme incorporated a range of activities including technical workshops, research and a visit to Fabrica Art Gallery.

Part of their project work involved selecting final images which were printed and displayed in an exhibition for the end of Summer School showcase. The photographs are still displayed in the foyer of the university’s Grand Parade Building.

Anna McGovern, Outreach Coordinator at the university, said: “The enthusiasm, talent and commitment demonstrated by all participants was extremely impressive.

“Over the course of the week students grew in confidence, not only in their technical skills, but also their ability to communicate their ideas and present their work.

“The student ambassadors and course tutors did a great job of creating an informal and fun atmosphere allowing for plenty of valuable and productive conversations about university life.

“I hope all the participants found the week helpful and enjoyable.”
