Seán's screaming success

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, considered one of the scariest movies ever made, has helped a University of 映客直播 graduate win a top national photography award.

14 June 2016

Seán Padraic Birnie, a fan of all things haunted, produced digitally corrupted images of the film’s ghostly Overlook Hotel and was named one of ten recently-graduated photographers to win the Graduate Photographer Award 2016 in association with Magnum Photos and Photo London.

Winners of the award, supported by , won mentoring from a Magnum photographer and a portfolio review event, as well as giving talks on their work as part of Photo London.

Seán graduated with an MA in Photography last September and is now working as a technician on the university’s Photography programme, as well as pursuing his .

He said: “I’m interested in the haunted and haunting aspects of communications technologies, principally photography and writing: doublings, uncanny copies and likenesses, and the estrangement of things lost and found in transmission.

The pictures were made by halting the download of The Shining before its completion, then re-photographing the incomplete footage as it was played on a television.

Memories of the Overlook Hotel concerns the circulation of images through technical media and cultural memory. It sits alongside other pieces of working exploring cameras, dark rooms, séance rooms and other recessed and concealed.

“Using various photographic forms, my work explores different kinds of interior space: dark rooms and séance rooms, haunted houses and hotels, the everyday living room watched over by family photographs, and the camera obscura itself.”

Seán said he was shocked when he was nominated for the award: “Nomination alone was a huge boost … and to be one of the ten winners has been wonderful.”

Seán said his MA course had made an “inestimable difference” to the way he works He said: “My background was not in photography so it was a huge challenge, but things started to come together very well in the second year. There are some amazing tutors on the course – Fergus Heron, Mark Power, Aaron Schuman, Judith Katz, as well as the technical team: Simon Sandys, Rachel Gillies, Mark Hawdon, John Williams, Richard Clayton, Matt Page – but most of all Joanna Lowry, the MA course leader. I owe her so much and could never thank her enough.”
