Graduate's journey to the Oscars

Millions of film fans will be tuning in to the Oscars this Sunday but few will be aware that a university graduate is playing a key role in bringing the awards to their TVs.

24 February 2016

Since graduating in 2006, TV producer John Hiscock has enjoyed a meteoric rise which has seen him produce interviews with A-list stars including Britney Spears, David Beckham, Mariah Carey, Angelina Jolie, Elton John, Julia Roberts and Ringo Starr.

His career began with a month-long placement at GMTV before he graduated with a BA(Hons) in media. He said: “I well and truly caught the live TV bug and became determined to pursue a career in that direction.

“Upon graduating I secured a position on a GMTV training programme and although the title of the show has changed over the years I'm still working for ITV's breakfast show 10 years on.

“It was the work placement in the media industry that first drew me to the course in 映客直播. My time spent at the university was some of the most fulfilling of my life and I have nothing but fond memories. The dedication and enthusiasm from the staff was infectious and they helped me to believe in myself and focus my mind towards a career.”

John is now managing Good Morning Britain and Lorraine's Los Angeles bureau, and on 28 February he will be working in Hollywood at this year’s Oscars night.

John said: “Little did I realise that the placement, which Debbie Disley in the university's placement unit went above and beyond to secure for me at GMTV, would be starting me onto a career path that I'm still enjoying today.”

He began as a runner (assisting with the smooth running of the production office and the studio) and progressed to Senior Features Producer before being posted to America.

He said: “Working in the US has been truly mind blowing. I started in New York and after six months moved over to LA. Although it was initially daunting starting a new life, working away from the UK has taught me a great deal about myself and has made me a much more rounded producer. Without fail I'm challenged on a daily basis and every skill I've picked up from my studies and career to date come into play.

“Almost every week I have to pinch myself that I live in LA and not just because of the amazing sunny weather, my job has brought me into contact with some of Hollywood's biggest stars.”
