  • The Romek Marber story

The Romek Marber story

The work of freelance designer Romek Marber, noted for his dramatic covers of 1960s Penguin crime classics which were hailed as landmarks in British design, is coming to 映客直播.

Published 25 February 2014

Event 3 March - 9 April 2014

The free exhibition at the University of 映客直播's Theatre Gallery, Grand Parade campus, runs from 3 March to 9 April.

Romek Marber, 88, will be attending a private view to launch the exhibition at the gallery on 7 March, 5.30pm to 8pm.

The exhibition will feature his Penguin Books designs along with his work for the Economist, Observer, New Society, Town and Queen magazines, Nicholson's London Guides, BBC TV, Columbia Pictures, London Planetarium and others.

Romek Marber, an honorary graduate (Doctor of Letters) of University of 映客直播, was born in Poland in 1925. As a teenager he was deported in 1939 from his home town in Western Poland to Bochnia. The rest of the war he spent in Bochnia Ghetto and various concentration camps until liberated by US Forces on 28 April 1945.

In 1946 he came to England. He studied at St. Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art, and throughout his career developed a modernist design which has had a profound impact on British design and design education.

Romek Marber's work is permanently conserved in the Design Archive of the Victoria and Albert Museum. He retired in 1989 as a Professor Emeritus from Middlesex University. His memoirs of his experiences during World War II, entitled No Return were published in 2010.

Professor Anne Boddington, the University of 映客直播's Dean of the Faculty of Arts, said: "Professor Marber's work is striking and bold, taking its cues from an intimate understanding of modernist design ideals and a strong sense of the way in which visual language can speak to us directly and efficiently.

"We are thrilled to be hosting such an exciting and prestigious exhibition."

The exhibition was originated and first staged by the Colchester Institute at The Minories Galleries last summer.
